Aims of Psychotherapy & Counselling
Using mainly a Transactional Analysis approach to counselling and psychotherapy, I work on the premise that our past experiences influence the way we see ourselves, others and the world around us, but also that each of us has the capacity to change these perceptions, free ourselves from the past and live a different life in the present.
Counselling allows people to work through 'here and now' difficulties by sharing their thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment, and helps to explain different ways of managing these.
Psychotherapy offers a more in-depth approach by exploring the early childhood experiences that led to unhelpful decisions about self and others which then impact on the way situations are managed today. Psychotherapy can be short or long term and is usually on a weekly basis, each session being around 50 minutes in length.
